My name is Christel Wekon-Kemeni and I am currently a Pediatric Resident at the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital. I’m from the Hampton Roads of Virginia, graduated from the University of Miami with my B.S. in Microbiology & Immunology in May of 2015 and earned my medical degree from the Wake Forest School of Medicine in May of 2019.

Black Man M.D. is a blog that was created at the start of my first year of medical school after I was unable to find a strong online presence of Black men in medicine. I figured that since I wasn’t able to find the online presence I was looking for, I would just go ahead and create it so that others like me could find someone to relate to if they were thinking about going into the field of healthcare. Throughout my time as a medical student, I consistently updated the blog with my experiences on a weekly basis and have continued to try and keep it updated throughout my time in residency. Additionally, the blog houses several other popular sections such as the LifeSavers page where I share many of the resources I used throughout medical school, the Useful Blogs page where I share many other useful blogs out there pertinent to the field of healthcare, the Med School 101 page where I share a lot of useful information about getting into medical school, and the Health Career Spotlight Series, a series that highlights minority students and professionals studying and/or working in the field of healthcare. The blog also houses the Desire To Inspire Scholarship, a scholarship that is dedicated to recognizing a young individual from a historically underrepresented minority group who is interested in a career in healthcare and is making a determined effort to inspire others in some way, shape or form.
